On losing compassion

When did we Filipinos lose our compassion?

We don’t lack discipline, we lack compassion. We have forgotten to put ourselves in our brothers’ and sisters’ footsteps. For if we truly cared aboute ach other, discipline would be easy. Rules are there to protect every citizen, right? But look around and see the disobedience. From traffic to litterting to smoking to leading the country, we put ourselves above the rules as long as it is convenient for us.

We have lost the ability to feel for the needs of others. We allow extra-judicial killing to happen so long as it doesn’t happen to us or anyone we value. We have distanced ourselves from everyone. We troll and bash behind fake accounts because we don’t care about how others feel.

We allow catcalling to happen because we aren’t the victims. We litter because we aren’t the ones who clean up. We smoke because we don’t care who we take with us to the grave. We expect to be treated specially yet when we are inconvenienced we are the first to cry for equality.

We have lost our compassion, and replaced it with convenience and pride. We have lost our compassion and in doing so, we have become undisciplined and hypocritical. We are tearing each other apart. Do we still say “proud to be Pinoy”?

Look around. What’s there to be proud of?
